Jessica Phillips

Jessica Phillips creates in a range of mediums, with watercolour as her primary form of work. She perceives the fluidity and movement of watercolour paint as symbolic of her emotional nature; with ebbs and flows of liquid embodying her turbulent mental health. She paints on cold press, fine grain paper which ties her works to trees and nature.

Phillips’ main focus is portraiture. She has always been drawn to replicating and perceiving her own face and finds interest in creating emotion and reaction with paint. Her current work depicts feelings experienced during her time struggling with anxiety. She translates the feelings she encountered into powerful self portraits using colour and facial expression.

Phillips also enjoys spending time with nature and incorporates this into her work. She often creates and uses her own pigments made with leaves, rocks and clay. Living and working in Wales, she finds joy in using the local landscape as both inspiration and subject.
