Kayla Matthews

Kayla Matthews works with expressive, abstract painting. She sees this as an outpouring of automatic creativity and emotion. There is almost never a driving concept determining her individual works, instead that comes afterwards with what can be seen in the shapes and forms that have been created, post-completion.

This way she explores femininity through an abstracted lens and seeks to challenge preconceptions about women painters. This process is performative but subtle, with her work being characterised by large, hypnotic rhythms and gestures with colours that mesh with her brushwork.
